The Center for Human-Computer Interaction is an interdisciplinary research group at the University of Salzburg. Established in 2005 as research unit at the former ICT&S Center, currently approx. 40 researchers study the interplay between humans and computers in order to enable desired interactions and explore desirable futures. Dourish furthers interaction design, with the term embodied interaction (EI), which offers a new model of interpreting interaction that extends recent human–computer interaction (HCI) research trends in ‘tangible’ and ‘social’ computing and is defined as indicating that ‘how we understand the world, ourselves and interaction comes from our location in a physical and social world of Together, the five groups span topics ranging from embodied interaction, virtual and augmented reality, data visualization, child-computer interaction, soft materials interaction, and interactive storytelling amongst others. The five research groups in HCI@Viz are: The StoryLab The Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) Lab investigates how immersive technologies can be designed and developed to facilitate user experience in education and healthcare.

This workshop aims to explore how interactive systems can enhance sports experiences beyond performance – highlighting an Embodied Interaction perspective. Activities include hands-on discussion on state-of-the-art research on embodied interaction and sports in HCI, and developing tangible concepts that enhance sports experiences. 2012-10-06 However, many questions remain as to exactly what embodied interaction means and whether it can be considered a coherent program of research. The aim of this special issue is to critically explore different perspectives on embodied interaction in HCI and interaction design research and practice and to focus on what theoretical traction they can provide. In the first main section, we provide a short historical overview of the cognitivist theories that His approach, termed embodied interaction, rejects the cognitivist models of the previous generation of HCI theory, embracing work in phenomenology and emphasizing practical social and physical action.

Activities include hands-on discussion on state-of-the-art research on embodied interaction and sports in HCI, and developing tangible concepts that enhance sports experiences. Everyday human interaction is embodied in that it is non-rationalising, intersubjective and bodily activity. Philosophers, sociologists and other writers have long discussed the way that much of our activity has these characteristics, but Dourish's point is that traditional approaches to HCI design do not take full account of embodiment, i.e.

Rather than embedding fixed notions of meaning within technologies, embodied interaction is based on the understanding that For over ten years researchers in human-computer interaction (HCI) have explored an embodied perspective that seeks to describe and explain the fundamental role played by the physical body in how we experience, interact with and understand computation in the world we live in. Recently, such a perspective has been used to discuss human actions and interactions with a range of computational Inbodied Interaction: Toward an HCI-Focused Framing of the Complex Body All body-based discussions have a particular way of framing the body. In the medical model, the body is framed as the site of disease, and its focus is for interventions to prevent or treat disease (see the article on tuning in this section). embodied interaction in HCI and interaction design research and practice and to focus on what theoretical traction they can provide.
